The President's Turn
The year 2009 showed the promise of a new era in The National
Hand Dance Association. A new administration worked hard and
extensively to place the organization on the radar screen of not
only the Hand Dance community, but also the arts and humanities
organizations both locally and nationally.
The members of NHDA voted in a new Administration, increased its
membership of individuals, affiliates and chapters, held its
first youth chapter dance, hosted 4 fund raisers, and sponsored
three youth and young adult couples to compete in the U.S. Open
Swing Dance Championships in Anaheim, California in November
2009.
The year 2010 will continue the mission of NHDA, To Preserve,
Educate and Promote the art form of Hand Dance. The
organization started off the year with coming to the aid of the
Haitians in the aftermath of one of the worse earthquakes of all
time. Through the efforts of NHDA Historian, Kim Frazier, NHDA
embarked on a shoe drive to collect 1,000 pairs of flat shoes
for men, women and children to send as the Hand Dance
community's part in the relief efforts. In partnering with the
shoe charity, Soles 4 Souls, NHDA collected more than 1,000
pairs of shoe, it collected 2,000 pairs of shoes!
What better way to give than to give what is most important to a
dancer…..shoes. The Hand Dance community wanted to contribute to
the relief efforts by giving something that we sometimes take
for granted.
NHDA is continuing its efforts to archive the 50 year history of
Hand Dance and the history of The National Hand Dance
Association, which formed in 1994.
And we maintain our commitment to our new generation of Hand
Dancers by supporting their desire to compete in local and
national dance competitions.
Our biggest challenge is increasing our membership rolls. We
hope to be able to bring in more renewals from the "old school"
arena, and welcome those who now make hand dance their dance of
choice.
We hope you will continue to visit our web site at
http://www.nationalhanddanceassociation.org. Our web site
offers information on classes, social and public events,
spotlight features on NHDA members and popular members of the
Hand Dance community, and more. We invite you to become a member
of NHDA. Membership information is included on the web site.
Feel free to email me and other NHDA Executive members with
comments, questions, or suggestions.
The National Hand Dance Association is recognized by The DC
Commission on the Arts and Humanities, The Humanities Council of
Washington, DC and The Smithsonian Institution Division of
Folklife.
